Principal's Message

Welcome to the website of Notre Dame College School. As an alumnus, it is with great pride that I invite you to learn more about the history, accomplishments, and current offerings of our school.

For over 75 years, Notre Dame has existed as the only Catholic high school in Welland and the first co-educational Catholic High School in the Niagara Region. Notre Dame College School was built under the leadership of the sisters of Notre Dame and then the Congregation of Holy Cross. The Holy Cross Fathers were the primary educators for the first 20 years of its existence, with the final priest retiring from teaching in the mid-90s. The impact and influence of an education delivered by men and women dedicated to a life founded in Christ has left an indelible mark on this community; it is for this reason the Holy Cross Fathers are still deeply connected to the students and staff of the school. The fabric of our school is built on a commitment of social justice, enriched by traditions like our 50-year old Pilgrimage and a dedication to all in our community and our world.

Since its inception in 1947, Notre Dame has grown into a community of approximately 1350 learners and 100 teaching and support staff. Throughout these years,  it has been the goal of the administration and teaching staff to ensure that students in the city of Welland had access to a first-class Catholic education. When you peruse the classes, co-curricular and extra-curricular offerings on this website, you will see that this goal has not only been met, but surpassed. As the only school in Welland offering pre-AP and AP programming,  we have set ourselves apart academically by preparing students for future success at the University level. Studies have shown that students who take even only one AP exam perform better at introductory university courses than their peers who have not. In addition, we currently offer pre-AP in Grades 9-11 and Grade 12 AP in English, Biology, Chemistry, Math, Geography, with more options on the horizon. In addition, Notre Dame offers a rich French Immersion program - opening the doors to a second-language program to our students from Grades 9 through 12.

Beyond this and very proudly, our SHSM opportunities are second to none, with many of our students receiving Red Seal designations at graduation, giving them an advantage in the world of Skilled Trades. We are the only school in the board with a state of the art facility off-site that houses our Construction and Automotive classes. From Culinary to Cosmetology and Automotive to Construction, Notre Dame has produced many skilled tradespeople across several sectors. Whether your child’s goal is University, College, Trades or the Workplace, they will receive a first-class education that is based on the gospel values and rooted in Catholic Social Teaching.

For many graduates, the extracurricular opportunities offered at Notre Dame enhanced their high school experience exponentially. The eclectic offerings in our school speak to and meet the needs of our diverse student populations, providing a sense of belonging. These experiences not only support mental health but also produce well-rounded individuals who stand out amongst their peers in post-secondary and beyond.

As a mother of two Notre Dame Graduates, I can say with confidence there is no other place I would have preferred to send my two children, and that is the greatest review I can provide. At the end of the day, I strongly believe that if it isn’t good enough for my own children, it isn’t good enough for yours.

I invite you to come in during our open house in January to see all the wonderful things happening in our building. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact any member of our administration or Guidance Department.

Go Irish!
